LOKILETTER

ABOUT

CONTACT

Lokiletter is decorative typeface which explores the origins of today’s English Latin Alphabet.

It functions as a historical study, and a stylish type solution for period-piece titles.

I researched a variety of proto-alphabets from Europe, as the Latin alphabet – like many alphabets – was grown from a confluence of cultures over the span of hundreds of years. The primary influences were 2nd-8th century Elder Futhark runes, 5th-11th century Anglo Saxon runes, and 12th century Medieval runes.

I created dozens of overlays, synthetizing commonalities between each letterform, and then cross-referenced all forms to find the commonalities across the entire alphabet. Using these insights, I was able to create a system to reinterpret each letter in a way that referenced historical influences, resembled contemporary forms, and maintained visual consistency across the typeface.
